Iron isomaltoside 1000 is used to treat iron deficiency anaemia (low red blood cell count caused by lack of iron in your body).
Iron isomaltoside 1000 injection is to be given intravenously (into the vein) as an infusion or slow injection. It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor based on your blood iron level and body weight.
Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Iron isomaltoside 1000.
If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
Do not use Iron isomaltoside if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or similar medications such as iron sucrose.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- liver problems
- anaemia which is not caused by iron deficiency e.g. haemolytic anaemia (a type of anaemia where red blood cells are destroyed)
- haemochromatosis (a type of hereditary disorder)
- too much iron or problem in the way your body uses iron
- ongoing bacterial infection in your blood
as Iron isomaltoside 1000 may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- liver disease
- asthma
- eczema (inflamed or irritated skin)
- short- or long-term infections
- porphyria (an inherited disorder that may cause skin or nerve problems)
- systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (autoimmune disease that causes inflammation)
- rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation in joints of fingers, wrist, feet, ankles)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are going for certain laboratory tests (e.g. blood bilirubin and calcium tests), inform your doctor that you are using this medicine.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- You may need to have routine blood tests (e.g. haemoglobin, blood iron levels) while you are being treated with Iron isomaltoside 1000. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
- Regular monitoring may also be needed for signs and symptoms of allergic reactions while you are being treated with this medicine.
Iron isomaltoside 1000 may cause any of the following side effects: headache, fever, problems with your eyesight, nausea, vomiting, constipation, altered taste, cough, difficulty breathing, fatigue, numbness or tingling sensation in the hands and feet, back pain, and itching, pain or swelling at the injection site.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes, mouth or throat
- light headedness, fainting
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- oral medicines containing iron or iron supplements
- dimercaprol (antidote for certain poisoning)
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Do not freeze.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
